Help Gospel for Asia in Reaching out to the Cyclone Survivors in Myanmar (Burma)

On Friday, May 2, Cyclone Nargis and the 12-foot-high storm surge that followed flooded coastal Myanmar (Burma), leaving up to 100,000 dead and 1 million or more without shelter. Still recovering from the 2004 Christmas tsunami, the military junta in Myanmar was ill equipped to feed, shelter, and care for the storm’s countless victims.

GFA missionaries serve at about 400 churches and 250 mission stations in Burma. In 2006, the military-run government of Burma forbade foreign non-government organizations from doing aid work in the country. In the face of this disaster, the government is now relenting and allowing outside aid.

Since GFA missionaries are already in the country and have found favor with the government, they are one of the few groups able to offer immediate help to the people as they begin the recovery process.

Twelve-year-old Ashish never thought he would have a good education. He and his family live in Uttar Pradesh, northwest India. They are Dalits (”Untouchables”). Two years ago, Gospel for Asia started a Bridge of Hope center in Ashish’s village. Now that he is studying in school, Ashish’s whole outlook on life has changed. He is receiving an education, which will enable him to break out of the unending cycle of poverty that enslaves millions of Dalits in South Asia. Most importantly, Ashish has met Jesus. Watch the photoshow to see more of how God is using this Bridge of Hope center.

Take this story and multiply it, and we are still only seeing just a small bit of all that God is doing in Asia. The prayers and financial support of believers like you are changing lives for eternity, and those who have never heard Jesus’ name are now worshipping the one true God.

The mythical marriage of two Hindu gods is the basis for the Sitalsasti festival in Orissa, India. Thousands of devotees, hijras and curious Westerners came to the festival for dancing, rituals and celebrations. The Lord provided Gospel for Asia missionaries with an opportunity to reach out to many people with the love of Jesus, including a group who came hoping to be born into a better station in their next life.
