John Hagee Now Friends with the Roman Catholic Church

Date May 15, 2008

It’s quite the buzz, Rev. John Hagee, has sent a letter of apology to the Catholic League for his alleged anti-Catholic views.

Hagee had been criticized for reportedly calling the Catholic Church “The Great Whore,” an “apostate church,” the “anti-Christ,” and a “false cult system.” He had also accused the Catholic Church of nurturing anti-Semitism. Hagee repeated allegations of Pope Pius XII’s indifference to Nazism and linked Adolf Hitler’s anti-Semitism to his Catholic education.

In the May 12 letter to the Catholic League and its president Bill Donohue, Rev. Hagee said he was writing to “clarify my views” and “advance greater unity between Catholics and Evangelicals.” Link to the letter can be found here.

Apparently Hagee is OK with ignoring Galatians 1:6-9. I suppose Hagee thinks the Roman Catholic Church preaches a biblical gospel.

Gospel preachers of old like Spurgeon and M. Lloyd-Jones held that Rome does not preach a biblical gospel.

    Hello Shane,

If one professing Christian shows charity to another professing Christian, by asking forgiveness for an offense, how can he be accused of ignoring the bible?

[Pay attention to yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him, and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.” - Luke 17:3-4 ESV]

I agree that Spurgeon and M. Lloyd-Jones were pretty good gospel preachers (though they may not have been completely accurate). Calling them “OLD” gospel preachers is a relative term I guess. I prefer the accuracy of 2 much older gospel preachers on this subject:

“I would not believe in the Gospel if the authority of the Catholic Church did not move me to do so.”
“If you believe what you like in the Gospel, and reject what you don’t like, it is not the Gospel you believe, but yourself.” - Augustine of Hippo

“Hold firmly that our faith is identical with that of the ancients. Deny this, and you dissolve the unity of the Church.”
“Clearly the person who accepts the Church as an infallible guide will believe whatever the Church teaches.” - Thomas Aquinas

    Hi Shane,

Honestly, why should anybody bow to Phil Donahue? I could care less if Phil is offended or not. In fact, I was quite offended at it show when it was on the air. I don’t see Luther, Wesley, or Calvin apologizing to Roman system. I’m so sick of this milk toast, walking on egg shells , politically correct type of Christianity. Hey, I love people in the Catholic church but that doesn’t mean I have to apologize for thinking it’s un-biblical. It’s no secret that Constantine paganized Christianity to unite Rome. In all honestly, I love Hagee but who does any celebrity or religious system think they are that we need to bow down & apologize for preaching the convictions of our heart. Free Speech Folks!! That applies to us Christians too.

There are many issues that we as the children of God are faced with such as abortion, the sanctity of marriage, world peace, etc. In order to confront these difficult issues effectively I believe it is paramount in importance that there is unity of purpose among us. That means that we must tear down these walls of division and not let the Evil One separate us. I applaud Rev. Hagee for his courage in promoting reconciliation with the Catholic Church.
