What Should Christians Know About ‘Evangelicals & Catholics Together’ ?

Date July 5, 2007

Dr. Robert Saucy (Biola University) shares his concerns about this growing movement.

After reading this article, I was pleasantly suprised to discover the view of Dr. Saucy on this topic. Dr. Saucy stops short of calling the Roman Catholic Church apostate but does share his concern from an evangelical protestants perspective. I do not know Dr. Saucy’s views on all aspects of Evangelical doctrine, let that be said now. I am however very pleased at Dr. Saucy’s stance with regards to “Evangelicals and Catholics Together”.

Here is a sampling from the article.

In 1994, 40 Roman Catholics and evangelical Protestants signed a controversial document titled, “Evangelicals & Catholics Together: The Christian Mission in the Third Millennium.” It affirmed agreement on basic articles of the Christian faith and urged cooperation in world evangelization and on social issues, like fighting abortion. Charles Colson (founder of Prison Fellowship), Bill Bright (founder of Campus Crusade for Christ) and James I. Packer (theologian) signed it. Mark Noll’s book, Is the Reformation Over? (Baker Academic, 2005), brought the movement back into the spotlight. Biola Connections spoke with Robert Saucy, Biola University’s distinguished professor of systematic theology, to learn more.

What makes this article stand out is that it comes from the world of Academia. In the world of Christian Academia, it is rare today to get a clear, distinct view on a matter. It is also rare to get such an othodox reponse.

I want to openly commend Dr. Saucy for taking such an unpopular stand on a very important topic.

May God receive all the praise.
